How to care for porch pumpkins in Cincinnati
Learn what affects uncut pumpkins outdoors, how to spot deterioration, and how to care for a fall porch display in Cincinnati’s changing weather.
Mother Pam can choose the pumpkins and place them beautifully. How long they stay that way depends on the pumpkins, the porch, and the weather. There is no dependable number of days for every outdoor display, and we do not guarantee a particular lifespan.
A little attention helps. Keep the pumpkins intact, water the plants carefully, and look over the display as you come and go.

A porch has weather. A storage room does not.
Advice about pumpkins keeping for months usually describes controlled storage. An outdoor entrance has sun, rain, temperature swings, and wildlife. Those are different conditions.
Choose your installation window around the part of fall that matters most to you. A later installation starts the display later; it does not guarantee that every piece will stay unchanged through a particular holiday.
Mind the weather at your own front door.
Check the forecast for your address, especially as freezing weather approaches. Sun, shelter, watering, and water collecting around the entrance can affect the display. Tell Mother Pam about sprinklers, downspouts, and areas that stay wet before installation.
Shelter from rain and strong direct sunlight can help pumpkins hold up. Avoid spraying them or leaving them in standing water. Ask for help before moving a heavy or unstable arrangement.
The stem is not a handle.
Carry a loose pumpkin by its body. Cuts, punctures, and broken stems can give decay an opening. Keep display pumpkins uncarved when you want them to hold up longer; plan separate jack-o’-lanterns close to the occasion. Never carve a piece supporting a grouping.
Water the plants. Leave the pumpkins out of it.
Check the soil in potted plants daily and follow the care instructions for the plants supplied. Checking daily does not mean watering daily: the plant, pot, soil, and weather determine the need. Apply water to the soil and let excess drain away from the pumpkins. Avoid leaving pots in collected water.
Plan ahead for a freeze.
Freezing can damage pumpkins, with softening or collapse after thawing. A light frost and a hard freeze are not the same, and a cover cannot promise protection.
Before freezing weather, move only loose pieces you can safely carry to a dry, sheltered place above freezing. Keep entrances clear. Leave heavy or supporting pieces alone and contact Mother Pam for help with safe options. Plants need the cold-weather care appropriate to their variety.
The squirrels have their own plans.
Natural pumpkins can attract wildlife, and Mother Pam does not promise squirrel protection. If you notice chewing, watch the affected piece for softening or decay. This guide does not recommend a homemade spray or coating. Ask about a specific product before using it around the display, and follow its label for the intended use, people, pets, and surfaces.
A quick look when you come home.
Watch for leaking, mold, collapse, or very soft spots, especially after rain or freezing weather. Check the visible surface around the display without lifting a stack. You’ll need to check the display and water the plants. Visits to provide that care or refresh the display aren’t part of our service.
If you can safely remove a deteriorating piece, do so promptly. You do not need permission and should not wait for pickup. If it is heavy, supports other pieces, or is unstable, keep people and pets clear and contact Mother Pam. Natural materials can release moisture and mark surfaces.

Photos within 48 hours help us review it, but you can still contact us about something discovered later. Safe removal does not, by itself, prevent a review.

Pickup is the final visit.
If you add pickup, we’ll arrange a date at the end of the season to collect the materials we supplied that are still in the area we decorated. Pickup does not include visits to refresh the display or removal of your own decorations. Follow the safe-removal guidance above if a piece starts to deteriorate before then.
